Geographic Information Systems
The City of Kuna’s mapping needs are addressed by the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) staff, which is structured under the Public Works Department.

Kuna’s GIS Department developed as most GIS departments do throughout the nation; they are born from either the Planning and Zoning office or in the Public Works Department by a person or two that has some sort of mapping experience. As our city evolved there was a void in having a GIS-centric personnel to wrangle in and manage all the data that an established GIS system maintains. We have remedied this by using old AutoCad drawings, ARC maps, ordinances, engineering plans, hand held GPS, total station survey equipment, and aerial photos to complete a GIS system our city can be proud of. Currently, every manhole, fire hydrant, water valve, storm drain, sewer line, light pole, and city maintained trees and shrubs are collected and maintained in the city's GIS. However, not all this data is available for public viewing for current security reasons.

Our goal is to provide accurate and structured spatial information to our public works crews, the public, and to developers that request such information from time to time.
